SEO MCP servers compared: Ahrefs, Semrush, DataForSEO and PandaCrawl

SEO MCP servers for Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor compared: the data each exposes, whether it reads your Search Console, the cheapest way in, and limits.

Competitor prices and plans checked on 2026-10-17, from each vendor's own pricing and docs pages. Written by the PandaCrawl team, so read it knowing we make one of the tools compared.

An MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Codex call an SEO tool directly, so the numbers in an answer come from a real lookup instead of the model's memory. Every major SEO vendor now has one. They differ in three ways that matter: what data they expose, whether they can read your own site's data (Search Console, Analytics), and what you pay before you can connect at all.

Which one to pick

You already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush. Use their MCP. Your agent gets the same numbers your team already reports on, and the units included with your plan go a long way for occasional questions. Watch the unit counters if an agent runs long research loops: every call spends them.

You want the raw data and you're comfortable wiring it up. The DataForSEO MCP is the cheapest route to keyword, SERP and backlink data: no subscription, pay per request. The trade-off is that it is a thin layer over an API. Your agent has to know which endpoint to call and how to read the response, and there is nothing persistent: no projects, no saved rank trackers, no history, no Search Console.

Raw responses also cost your assistant context. We sent the same request through both servers on 2026-09-30: keyword ideas for "invoice app" came back as 140,180 bytes of JSON from the DataForSEO MCP and 4,469 bytes of text from PandaCrawl's, about 31 times smaller, for the same DataForSEO charge. A top-20 Google results page was 15 times smaller. Smaller responses leave the assistant more room to reason and let a long research session run before its context fills up.

You want your agent to do SEO work, not just fetch numbers. That is what PandaCrawl's MCP is built for. It runs on DataForSEO's data too, and adds what an agent needs to carry out the job:

  • Your own data next to market data. Search Console queries and pages, URL inspection, Google Analytics landing pages and conversions, and Bing performance, all free to read. "Which pages lost clicks this month?" needs your data, not a third-party estimate.
  • State that persists. Projects, saved keyword lists, rank trackers that run on a schedule, site audits, AI visibility tracking and saved reports. An agent can set up a tracker today and read its history next month.
  • Project context. Your key pages, competitors and positioning, stored once and read by every tool, so the agent stops suggesting keywords you'd never want.
  • Costs before spending. Each tool's description says what a call costs, and rank trackers and AI visibility runs come with estimates, so an agent can ask before a big batch.
  • Works in the major clients. Claude on any plan, ChatGPT on Business, Enterprise and Edu (Pro is read-only), Cursor, Codex and any client that speaks remote MCP. Setup takes one URL and a login: see the MCP docs.

What to check before you connect any SEO MCP

  1. Can it read your own site's data? For most real questions ("why did traffic drop?") Search Console matters more than any keyword database.
  2. How is usage metered? Units, credits or per-request pricing. An agent can make dozens of calls for one question, so the meter matters more than it does for a human clicking around.
  3. Does anything persist? Without projects and saved trackers, every conversation starts from zero.
  4. Which clients does it support, and on which of their plans? ChatGPT in particular limits custom MCP connections by plan.
