Claude for SEO, With Real Data
Claude reasons well about SEO but can't see your rankings or search volumes. Connect it to live data in two minutes, then use these workflows.
Claude is good at SEO thinking: reading a page and saying why it doesn't answer the question, grouping keywords by intent, turning a messy list into a plan. What it can't do on its own is see anything. It doesn't know your rankings, your traffic, how often a keyword is searched, or who is on page one today. Ask it anyway and it will answer fluently, and some of the numbers will be invented.
The fix is to give Claude a data source. Claude supports connectors (built on the Model Context Protocol, MCP): you add one URL, sign in once, and Claude can call the data source's tools in the middle of a conversation. With PandaCrawl connected, Claude can read your Google Search Console, crawl your site, pull keyword volumes and difficulty, look up competitors and backlinks, and check whether AI assistants mention you.
This guide covers the setup, what to ask first, the workflows that work best, and the habits that keep the answers trustworthy.
What Claude can and can't do for SEO
| Task | Claude on its own | Claude with live data |
|---|---|---|
| Rewrite a title or meta description | Good | Good, and it can pull every over-length title from a crawl first |
| Brainstorm keyword ideas | Plausible list, no volumes | Real volumes, difficulty and intent for each |
| "Where do I rank for X?" | Can't know | Reads Search Console or a rank tracker |
| Find pages close to page one | Can't know | Filters Search Console to positions 5–20 |
| Compare you with a competitor | General advice | Their actual ranking keywords and traffic estimate |
| Find broken links or missing tags | Only on pages you paste | Crawls the whole site |
| "Does ChatGPT recommend us?" | Can't check | Asks the AI models and reports who they name |
The left column is still useful. The right column is where the time savings are, because most SEO work is collecting numbers from five places before you can decide anything.
Set it up (about two minutes)
Claude on the web or the desktop app
Custom connectors work on every Claude plan, including Free, which allows one custom connector (Anthropic's guide).
- Open Customize → Connectors. In older versions of the app it's Settings → Connectors.
- Click +, then Add custom connector.
- Name it PandaCrawl and paste
https://app.pandacrawl.app/mcp. - Click Add, then Connect, and sign in to PandaCrawl.
On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds the connector once and each member connects with their own login.
Claude Code
One command, then approve the login when your browser opens:
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user pandacrawl https://app.pandacrawl.app/mcpClaude Code can also run PandaCrawl Agent Skills: packaged workflows such as keyword research, competitor analysis and a full SEO audit, each run with one slash command.
What to ask first: the page-one gap
Start with the question that uses your own data and costs nothing: which searches am I almost winning? Google shows ten results on page one. A page sitting at position 8–15 already has Google's attention; it usually needs a better answer or a few internal links, not a new article.
Using PandaCrawl, look at my Search Console data for the last 28 days and list
the searches where I'm at positions 5–20 with at least a few impressions.
Group them by page, and tell me which page to improve first and why. Here is what that returned for pandacrawl.app itself (28 days to 8 October 2026). It's a young site, so the numbers are small, and that's realistic: most sites start here.
| Search | Average position | Impressions |
|---|---|---|
| domain keyword tracking | 3.4 | 30 |
| backlinks free checker | 7.8 | 13 |
| domain age checker | 9.1 | 19 |
| domain age checker free | 9.8 | 9 |
| google domain age checker | 10.6 | 23 |
Three of the five are the same page, our free domain age checker, hovering around the bottom of page one. That's the decision Claude helps you reach in one message: improve that one page (answer "how do I check a domain's age on Google?" directly, link to it from related pages) before writing anything new. The data came from Search Console, so it costs nothing to pull.
Eight workflows Claude does well with live data
Each one is a single message. The full set, with variations, is in SEO prompts for Claude and ChatGPT.
- Quick wins from Search Console. The page-one gap above. Free.
- Site health in plain English. "Crawl my site and tell me the three problems worth fixing first." Claude reads every issue with its fix and ranks them by what matters. Free.
- Keyword research you can act on. "Find 10 keywords about [topic] a site my size could rank for." Claude pulls volumes and difficulty, then explains each pick. A few cents per seed keyword on your own data account.
- Competitor gap. "Which keywords bring [competitor] traffic that I don't rank for?" Real ranking data for both domains, filtered to the gaps.
- Keyword clustering. Paste or pull 200 keywords and ask Claude to group them into pages, one intent per page. This is where Claude's reasoning shines; the data just keeps it honest.
- Content brief from the live SERP. "Look at who ranks for [keyword] today and write a brief that beats them." Claude works from the actual top results (who ranks, their titles and snippets, which result types appear) instead of guessing.
- AI visibility. "Do ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention us when people ask about [category]?" PandaCrawl asks the models and reports who they name and which pages they cite.
- The monthly report. "Write a one-page SEO report for this month and save it to PandaCrawl." Traffic, rankings and site health in one place, ready to send.
In Claude, some results can come back as interactive views rather than text. The rank tracker, for example, renders as a sortable table with position changes.
Best practices
Tell Claude about the business once. The biggest quality lever is context: who you sell to, which customers matter, which searches look relevant but aren't. PandaCrawl stores this as project context that every conversation reads, so ask Claude to "save my positioning and competitors to PandaCrawl" once instead of re-explaining it each time.
Name the tool in the prompt. "Using PandaCrawl, …" makes Claude reach for the connector instead of answering from memory. Once it has used the connector in a conversation, follow-ups don't need the reminder.
Ask for one job at a time. "Do my SEO" produces a list of forty things. "Which three pages should I improve this week?" produces a decision.
Ask to see the numbers. "Show the search volume and position behind each recommendation." If a figure doesn't come from a tool call, it's a guess, and you'll be able to tell.
Set a cost rule for paid lookups. Search Console, Bing, Google Analytics and site crawls are free. Keyword, SERP, competitor and backlink lookups cost a few cents each (see what each action costs). Add "tell me the cost before running anything paid" to a big request and Claude will check first.
Keep the judgement. Claude can tell you a page is thin and a title is too long. Whether the page is genuinely the best answer is still your call, and so is deciding what not to do this month.
Don't mass-produce pages. Google's spam policies target pages made mainly to rank, however they're written. Use Claude to make a few pages much better, not many pages slightly different. Google's guidance on generative AI content calls it useful for research and structure, and warns that producing many pages without adding value can breach its scaled content abuse policy.
Claude for SEO: common questions
Is Claude good for SEO?
Claude is strong at the reasoning half of SEO: intent, structure, clustering, critiquing a page, writing briefs. On its own it lacks the data half: rankings, volumes, competitors and crawl results. Connected to a data source it does both, and that's where it saves real time.
Can Claude do keyword research?
Not reliably by itself. It will suggest keywords but can't know how often they're searched or how hard they are to rank for. Connected to PandaCrawl it pulls search volume, difficulty, intent and cost-per-click for each keyword, and can check who ranks today.
Can Claude see my Google Search Console data?
Yes, once a connector with Search Console access is added. In PandaCrawl you connect Search Console once to your project; Claude then reads clicks, impressions and positions through the connector. Nothing is shared beyond the project you approve.
Do I need Claude Pro?
No. Custom connectors work on Claude's Free plan, which allows one. Pro and above allow more and higher usage limits, which helps with long research sessions.
Will Google penalise content written with Claude?
Google says it rewards helpful content however it's produced, and penalises content made mainly to manipulate rankings, including mass-produced pages. Use Claude to research and improve, keep a human editor, and publish fewer, better pages.
Using ChatGPT instead? The setup and plan limits are different: see ChatGPT for SEO. For the full prompt list, see SEO prompts for Claude and ChatGPT. Setup details for every client are in the MCP docs.
