ChatGPT for SEO, With Real Data
How to use ChatGPT for SEO with live rankings and search data, which plans can connect a data source, and how to get your brand into ChatGPT's answers.
"ChatGPT for SEO" means two different things, and this guide covers both:
- Using ChatGPT to do SEO work: research, audits, briefs, rewrites.
- Getting your brand into ChatGPT's answers, now that people ask it what to buy.
The short version of the first: ChatGPT is a capable SEO assistant with no data. It can't see your rankings, traffic or search volumes, so anything numeric it tells you on its own is a guess. Connecting it to a live source fixes that, but in ChatGPT that depends on your plan. The short version of the second: you can measure it, and much of it comes down to being findable by the search indexes ChatGPT reads from.
What ChatGPT is good at without any data
Some SEO work needs no live data at all, and ChatGPT handles it well on any plan:
- Rewriting titles and meta descriptions to a length, with the keyword near the front.
- Drafting schema markup (FAQ, Product, Article) from a page you paste.
- Turning a keyword list you export into page groups, one search intent per page.
- Critiquing a draft against the question it's meant to answer.
What it shouldn't do unaided is choose keywords, judge competition, or tell you where you rank, because those answers need numbers it doesn't have.
Which ChatGPT plans can connect to live SEO data
ChatGPT connects to outside data through custom MCP apps in developer mode. Availability depends on the plan (OpenAI's help article, checked October 2026):
| ChatGPT plan | Custom MCP apps | What that means for SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Business, Enterprise, Edu | Yes, full (read and write) | Everything: research, Search Console, crawls, rank tracking setup, reports |
| Pro | Read and fetch only, in developer mode | Research and reading your data work; starting a crawl or a tracker doesn't |
| Plus, Free | Not available | Use one of the alternatives below |
Two other limits: MCP apps work on ChatGPT on the web, not the mobile apps, and on Business plans only workspace admins and owners can turn on developer mode.
Set up PandaCrawl in ChatGPT
On Business, Enterprise, Edu or Pro, on chatgpt.com:
- Turn on developer mode: Settings → Apps → Advanced settings → Developer mode. On Business, a workspace admin or owner does this for themselves. On Enterprise and Edu, an admin can grant it to members.
- Go to Apps → Create, name it PandaCrawl and paste
https://app.pandacrawl.app/mcp. - Choose OAuth, click Scan Tools, and sign in to PandaCrawl when asked.
- Click Create. The app appears with a Dev label.
- In a new chat, pick PandaCrawl from the tools menu, or mention it in your message.
App selection applies to one message at a time, so mention PandaCrawl again when a follow-up needs fresh data.
On ChatGPT Plus or Free
You have three options:
- Use Claude for the data-heavy work. Claude's custom connectors work on every plan, including Free. The prompts are the same; see Claude for SEO.
- Pull the data in PandaCrawl, think in ChatGPT. Export a keyword list, a Search Console report or a crawl's issues from the PandaCrawl app and paste it in. Slower, but ChatGPT is then reasoning over real numbers.
- Stick to the no-data tasks above, where ChatGPT is already useful.
A worked example: fixing what a crawl finds
Here's a job that splits neatly between the data source and ChatGPT. We crawled pandacrawl.app (63 pages, 11 October 2026). It found no critical problems and three kinds of minor issue:
| Issue | Pages |
|---|---|
| Meta description too long (over ~160 characters) | 15 |
| Title too long (over ~60 characters) | 12 |
| Meta description too short | 2 |
The crawl did the finding: our homepage description runs to 250 characters, and one library page title is 104. Rewriting 29 titles and descriptions to length, keeping each page's keyword up front, is exactly the kind of careful, repetitive editing ChatGPT is good at. With PandaCrawl connected, it's one message:
Using PandaCrawl, read the latest site audit for my site and list every title
and meta description that's too long or too short. For each, write a
replacement within the limit that keeps the page's main keyword near the
start. Return a table: URL, current, proposed, character count.Without a connector, paste the crawl's issue list into the chat and ask for the same table. Either way, read the rewrites before you ship them; a title that fits the limit but loses the point isn't an improvement.
Getting your brand into ChatGPT's answers
When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best tool for X", it either answers from what it learned in training or, increasingly, searches the web first and cites what it finds. You influence the second far more than the first.
Be findable by the indexes ChatGPT searches. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers; independent tests at launch found it leaning heavily on Bing, and Microsoft Copilot runs on Bing directly. Many sites set up Google Search Console and never touch Bing Webmaster Tools. Check that your important pages are in Bing's index and submit the ones that aren't. In PandaCrawl that's free, from the app or your assistant.
Measure before you optimise. You can't improve a number you don't have. AI visibility tracking asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your buyers ask, on a schedule, and records whether they name you, who they name instead, and which pages they cite. The cited pages are your to-do list: those are the sources the models trust for your topic.
Answer the question plainly on your own site. Pages that state clearly what you do, who it's for and how you compare are the ones that get quoted. A comparison page that's honest about where a competitor wins is more citable than one that isn't.
Best practices for ChatGPT and SEO
- Name the data source in the message ("Using PandaCrawl, …") so ChatGPT calls it rather than answering from memory.
- Give it the business context first: who you sell to and which searches aren't worth having. Saved once as PandaCrawl project context, it's read on every request.
- Ask for the numbers behind each recommendation. A figure that didn't come from a tool call is a guess.
- Ask for the cost before paid lookups. Search Console, Bing and site crawls are free; keyword, competitor and backlink lookups cost a few cents each (details).
- Keep a human edit on anything you publish, and publish a few strong pages rather than many thin ones. Google's guidance on generative AI content warns that many pages produced without added value can breach its scaled content abuse policy.

ChatGPT for SEO: common questions
Is ChatGPT good for SEO?
For writing and reasoning tasks (titles, descriptions, briefs, clustering, schema) yes, on any plan. For anything that needs data, such as keyword volumes, rankings or competitors, only when it's connected to a data source, which needs ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu (or Pro, read-only).
Can ChatGPT do keyword research?
It can brainstorm ideas, but it can't tell you how often they're searched or how hard they are to rank for. Connected to PandaCrawl it pulls real volume, difficulty and intent for each keyword. On Plus or Free, research the keywords in PandaCrawl and paste the results in.
Can ChatGPT see my Google Search Console?
Through a custom MCP app, yes, on the plans above. PandaCrawl reads your connected Search Console property and passes clicks, impressions and positions to ChatGPT when asked.
How do I get my website mentioned by ChatGPT?
Make sure your key pages are indexed by the search engines ChatGPT draws on (Bing especially), answer your category's questions plainly on your own pages, and track whether you're named with AI visibility tracking so you know whether changes work.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers and hasn't published the mix. Independent testing at launch found heavy reliance on Bing. Being well indexed in both Google and Bing covers you either way.
Setup for every client, including Claude and Cursor, is in the MCP docs.
